Discover Pica's Restaurant Of Upper Darby

If you’ve ever driven along 7803 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby Township, PA 19082, United States, chances are you’ve caught a whiff of something irresistible coming from Pica's Restaurant Of Upper Darby. I’ve been there more times than I can count-family dinners, casual weeknight cravings, even a birthday celebration-and every visit has felt like stepping into a local tradition that’s been perfected over decades.

The first thing you notice is the buzz. It’s not flashy or overdone; it’s warm, familiar, and comfortably loud in the way a true neighborhood pizza joint should be. The dining room carries that old-school Italian-American vibe, with friendly servers who know regulars by name. During my last visit, I watched a staff member greet three different tables like long-lost cousins. That kind of service isn’t scripted-it’s earned.

Now let’s talk about the menu, because that’s where this place really stands out. Their square pizza is the headline act. Unlike the typical thin New York slice, this one has a slightly thicker crust, baked in a pan so the edges crisp up beautifully. The sauce is tangy and layered with flavor, and they don’t bury it under too much cheese. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, pizza remains one of America’s top comfort foods year after year, and after tasting Pica’s version, it’s easy to see why. It hits that balance of texture, acidity, and richness that food scientists often describe as the sweet spot of flavor contrast.

One real-life example: I once brought a friend from out of town who considers himself a pizza purist. He usually critiques everything from dough fermentation to mozzarella quality. After one bite, he paused and simply said, “Okay, I get it now.” The crust had that airy interior with a crisp bottom-a sign of proper proofing and oven temperature control. Those small technical details matter, and you can taste the experience behind them.

Beyond pizza, the restaurant offers classic Italian dishes-think hearty pasta plates, chicken parmigiana, fresh salads, and sandwiches stacked high. I’ve ordered their baked ziti on a colder evening, and it arrived bubbling hot, layered with ricotta and marinara that tasted slow-simmered rather than rushed. The portion sizes are generous without feeling excessive, which reflects a kitchen that understands both value and quality.

Online reviews across platforms consistently mention consistency. That’s not easy in the restaurant industry. Harvard Business School has published research showing that consistency in food and service directly impacts repeat business and long-term reputation. From what I’ve seen firsthand, this establishment understands that principle well. Even on busy Friday nights, orders come out steady, and mistakes are rare.

Location also plays a part in its appeal. Being right in Upper Darby Township makes it a convenient stop for locals and visitors heading through Delaware County. Parking can get tight during peak hours, which is something to keep in mind, but turnover is fairly quick. If you’re planning a large group dinner, calling ahead is smart.

What gives this place authority in the local dining scene is its longevity. Restaurants don’t survive for decades without doing something right. Food trends change-artisan toppings, gluten-free crusts, plant-based options-but Pica’s has stayed true to its core identity while subtly adapting. That balance between tradition and flexibility is something culinary experts often highlight as key to sustainability in family-owned restaurants.

Of course, no place is perfect. On especially busy nights, you might wait a bit longer for a table, and the noise level can climb. But honestly, that energy feels like part of the charm rather than a flaw. It’s the sound of families sharing stories over pizza trays and friends debating which slice corner has the crispiest edge.

If you’re scanning restaurant reviews and looking for a spot with character, history, and genuinely satisfying Italian comfort food, this Upper Darby staple delivers. It’s not trying to reinvent dining. Instead, it focuses on doing the basics exceptionally well-great sauce, balanced flavors, welcoming service, and a menu that keeps people coming back year after year.

  • The pizza here makes no sense but it is one of the best I have ever had. So simple and different but delicious. We also had the calamari and burrata salad. The ambiance is a bit dated and the service was standard, nothing special. Still worth it to go for the pizza.

  • I heard great things about Pica’s and decided to try them out for the first. The pica’s pizza was really good. The dough and sauce were very tasty. I enjoyed the pizza hot and cold. Which is very critical for any pizza that's considered good. I will be back and recommend giving Pica’s a try if you have never been.

  • They no longer offer indoor dining but their website suggests they do. They also list lunch specials but they weren't listed on the menu. I got a turkey club to go which was huge and delicious. Came with a tiny bag of Utz chips, not fries. I didn't try the pizza but it looks vastly different from other pizza in the area.

  • Went here for my bday and we had a great experience. The waitress Connie was super nice and a perfect server! Thank you Connie.... atmosphere was typical 80s Picas UD style and that's why I came! I love the old school Italian neighborhood vibe..... food was amazing as usual and portions huge for the price. Would definitely come back! Plenty of parking in lot... kid friendly- very nice to my son.

  • Long time traditional/neighborhood Italian restuarant. Great food and atomosphere. Something chain restuarants have a hard time duplicating . What a great spot.
